What is an inspection test plan checklist?

Every task performed, product produced, and employee representing your company needs to meet the highest quality standard. It’s easier to ensure this by creating an Inspection and Test Plan (ITP). Inspection test plans are a systematic way to perform quality checks at every stage of your project. With an ITP, your team can follow a series of steps that promote a high quality standard.

Because an inspection test plan adheres to the ISO 9001 standard for product control and servicing, it is a great tool for making sure that your product or project meets standard quality requirements. Preparing an inspection test plan checklist gives you a roadmap to improve our projects.

How do you prepare an inspection test plan checklist?

An ITP is one of the most important quality management tools you can use to improve the quality of your projects. Preparing an ITP checklist requires a systematic and well-documented approach.

Here are six best practices you can follow when writing an inspection test plan checklist.

1. Use a digital template

Using a digital template can save you time and energy which you need for other high-value tasks. These templates serve as guidelines for your ITP, while also letting you customize the checklist to your organization.

Digitizing your forms allows you to store all your observations, findings, and reports in one place..

2. Include all required tasks

When listing your tasks for each inspection, indicate the Definable Features of Work (DFOW). This is a detailed explanation of the what, how, and when of each inspection. Furthermore, follow the sequence indicated in the work methods statement that is required for high-risk work. This helps inspectors check that tasks were completed correctly.

Remember to include major inspection points or milestone points. An example of a milestone might be completing a floor in a high-rise building or finishing pouring the foundation.

3. Organize your documentation

Different inspections will require multiple safety or quality standards or requirements to be met. Having the necessary reference documents ready will make ITP and quality inspections faster.

4. Define all team responsibilities

To avoid disrupting your operations during inspections, make it a point to assign and note down roles in your ITP. This will help prevent any confusion and allow your team to navigate the inspection efficiently.

5. Involve your clients

Taking the time to explain your plan and involving clients in the ITP process will increase their confidence in your business. Once you’re done with the briefing, ask them to sign off on it. This shows them your quality management system is up to standards, and that your company is highly credible and professional.

6. Timestamp all your inspections

For maximum accuracy, make sure all dates and times are included in your inspection test plan, along with all the checklists used. Then, add your and a witness’s signatures. This ensures you can keep track of everything and gives you evidence in case of any dispute.

What are the benefits of an inspection test plan checklist?

Apart from the fact that an ITP helps you finish products or projects on time and at a higher standard, it benefits your business in other ways.

1. It identifies problems early

Projects have many parts that need to be tracked simultaneously, especially in the construction industry. That’s why identifying problems and risks beforehand /a> makes things run much more smoothly. More importantly, early detection prevents small problems from causingaccidents .

2. It keeps you on schedule

Delays in schedule can cost you valuable time and money. An inspection test plan ensures all processes are done in a timely manner. From bringing in equipment, coordinating with subcontractors, getting permits, and conducting inspections, you can plan everything using an inspection test plan checklist.

3. It keeps you in budget

Projects go over budget for many reasons, but the three most common are:

  • No one is assigned to monitor spending
  • The projects or production take longer than their deadline
  • The project or production went beyond its original scope

Using an inspection test plan checklist will help address any foreseeable problems or delays, minimizing any expense that’s beyond the project’s budget.

4. It helps you acquire permits

Permits are meant to enforce the implementation of proper safety standards which ensure the health and wellbeing of workers. On top of this, they are proof of your insurance coverage should an incident occur.

But while permits are essential, acquiring them can take some time and involves plenty of government-mandated steps which can be delayed, such as when obtaining a cold work permit or a hot work permit form. Use an ITP to list and apply for important permits beforehand so you can keep projects on track.

5. It helps provide supervision

It’s not uncommon for important steps in a project to be overlooked. This can lead to defective or low-quality products, as well as potential health and safety risks.

Frequent inspections and tests which are part of an ITP provide much needed supervision and quality assurance to ensure that nothing gets missed. Furthermore, the inspection test plan checklist won’t just serve as evidence that the inspections took place, it can also help monitor improvement and follow-up inspections. An ITP helps you establish a streamlined quality system that avoids preventable problems and provides a clear plan for meeting quality standards.
